The current Cochrane review sees a moderate benefit of cranberry products for preventing recurrent urinary-tract infections, especially in women and children — at a sufficient PAC dose. Important: cranberry does not treat an existing infection and does not replace antibiotics. Other popular promises (detox, broad antioxidant miracles) are poorly supported. And sweetened cranberry juice cancels out the low-sugar advantage.
How to use
For the urinary-tract benefit a sufficient PAC dose is what counts (often more reliable as a standardized extract/capsule than as juice). If juice, then unsweetened and diluted. Because of their tartness, fresh or frozen cranberries work best in combination (unsweetened compote, muesli). Not a substitute for medical treatment of an acute infection.
