Goji berries
The classic superfood import with a real core and a lot of marketing shell: exceptionally rich in zeaxanthin for the eyes — but botanically a nightshade, which is why Gundry views it critically. A case study in checking the hype.

Here is the surprising twist among the berries: goji (Lycium barbarum), like tomato and pepper, is a nightshade — exactly the family whose lectins Gundry criticizes. Despite the superfood image he therefore does not class it as a blanket yes-fruit. With an autoimmune focus his model advises caution; for others it remains a conditionally acceptable food in moderation and well cooked/soaked.

Li mentions goji mainly in connection with immunity and cellular protection: the berries contain specific polysaccharides (LBP) and exceptionally high zeaxanthin, a carotenoid that concentrates in the eye's macula. For the eye- and DNA-protection level that is plausible; across the other systems the data are thinner.

The solid core is zeaxanthin: goji is one of the richest dietary sources, and zeaxanthin (with lutein) is linked via the AREDS2 line to slower macular degeneration — small studies show a rise in macular pigment after goji intake. Much of the rest (general anti-aging miracles, energy claims) rests on small, often methodologically weak or manufacturer-linked studies. Realistically: a sensible zeaxanthin source, not a miracle — and, given its nightshade status, no automatic berry free pass.
How to use
Dried goji (the usual retail form) is high in sugar — a small handful (20–30 g) is enough, e.g. in muesli, tea or soaked. Fresh or frozen is rare. With autoimmune conditions, test individually because of the nightshade status. Watch for blood-thinning medication (warfarin) — interactions have been described for goji.
