GLP-1 Agonists (Semaglutide, Tirzepatide)

The drug class behind Ozempic, Wegovy & Mounjaro — originally for type-2 diabetes, now highly effective for weight loss. Prescription-only, with growing but still young longevity signals.

Also known as: glp-1, glp1, semaglutid, semaglutide, ozempic, wegovy, tirzepatid, tirzepatide, mounjaro

How it works

GLP-1 agonists mimic the gut hormone GLP-1: they boost post-meal insulin release, slow gastric emptying, and dampen appetite via the brain. This lowers blood sugar and produces substantial weight loss. Without accompanying resistance training, though, muscle mass is lost too, a key caveat.

Considerations

For weight loss and type-2 diabetes, efficacy is very well established; trials (SELECT) also show cardiovascular benefit in overweight. The 'longevity' effect so far is indirect — via less visceral fat and better metabolic health; direct lifespan data are lacking. Important caveat: meaningful muscle loss during weight loss (counter with strength training + protein), nausea, rarely pancreatitis. Prescription-only.
