Red Light Face Mask (LED)
An LED mask with red and near-infrared light for facial skin — photobiomodulation against wrinkles and for more even skin texture. FDA-cleared devices, moderate evidence.
How it works
The LED red-light mask works via photobiomodulation: red and near-infrared light boosts mitochondrial energy production in skin cells, which can stimulate collagen formation and dampen inflammation. From this follow effects on wrinkle smoothing and skin tone. Wavelength, dose and consistency determine the benefit.
Dosage
Depending on the device, usually 3–5 sessions/week of a few minutes each. Results take weeks to months of consistent use.
Considerations
For facial skin, studies show moderate improvements in fine lines, skin density, and texture. Important distinction: a face mask does **not** irradiate the scalp — for hair loss you need a laser/LED cap (see red light cap). Same principle (photobiomodulation), but different devices and goals. Quality and light output vary widely; mind eye protection.
