Saw Palmetto

A plant-based, mild DHT inhibitor — often marketed as 'natural finasteride'. Better data for prostate symptoms (BPH) than for hair loss, where the evidence is thin.

Also known as: saegepalme, sägepalme, saw palmetto, serenoa repens

How it works

Saw palmetto extract is thought to inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, like finasteride but more weakly, thereby lowering DHT formation. It's used mainly for benign prostate enlargement and against hair loss. The evidence is inconsistent and the effect smaller than with prescription drugs.

Dosage

Typically 160–320 mg/day (standardised lipid extract). Patience required — effects, if any, take months.

Considerations

Popular as a gentler, prescription-free alternative to finasteride. For hair loss, though, the evidence is weak (few, small studies); better studied is relief of BPH symptoms (mixed results). DHT inhibition is much milder than finasteride's — accordingly a smaller effect and lower side-effect risk.
