Olive Oil (high polyphenol)

Extra-virgin olive oil with high polyphenol content (>250 mg/kg). Hydroxytyrosol and oleocanthal are potent antioxidants with cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory effects.

Also known as: hydroxytyrosol, oleocanthal, EVOO

How it works

High-quality, polyphenol-rich olive oil provides compounds such as hydroxytyrosol and oleocanthal that are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant; oleocanthal inhibits enzymes similar to ibuprofen. Together with its monounsaturated fats, this explains much of the cardiovascular benefit of the Mediterranean diet (PREDIMED).

Considerations

Polyphenol content is the deciding factor. EU-certified health-claim levels start at 250 mg/kg. Anything below 100 mg/kg offers no meaningful effects.
